Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a Margarita Mile

As if we needed another excuse to enjoy a cheeky margarita, but to celebrate Cinco de Mayo without one? It would be unacceptable. The fifth of May marks the anniversary of Mexico’s victory at the 1862 Battle of Puebla and is now a day devoted to honouring Mexican culture and heritage. What better way to celebrate this iconic day than to embark on a margarita mile, exploring the best spots in Soho for that perfect blend of tequila and lime with some special ingredients along the way.

1. El Pastor Soho

Dressed up like the buildings you’d see in 19th Century Mexico City, El Pastor’s Soho branch is proud to bring their regional dishes, mezcal, and party spirit to London’s West End. Below this colourful venue filled with sparkling chandeliers and brass tables, their subterranean mezcal bar awaits you, ready to inject some mood lighting and music spun by a DJ into your evening. With a whole section of the menu dedicated to margaritas, you’ll be spoilt for choice with variations such as avocado and passion fruit, orange marmalade, and spiced mango. If you’d like your first margarita of the day done a specific way, let them know and they’ll use your tequila of choice to whip it up just how you like it.

2. El Camion

Next stop is the home of the infamous The Pink Chihuahua cocktail bar; El Camion is a lively Mexican eatery and late night basement bar in amongst the hustle and bustle of Soho’s Brewer Street. Welcoming tequila lovers every night until 3am, the venue is well-known for its burritos (which are anything but bitesize) and of course, their vibrant cocktail menu. Featuring six variations on the classic margarita, their talented bartenders will whip you up a margarita with mezcal, pomegranate, or if you’re feeling extra adventurous, their signature Tommy’s Margarita made with mango and chilli.

3. Beasy Soho

Situated in a converted barber shop, Beasy is the place to be for fancy hotdogs, classic cocktails, and a speakeasy-style atmosphere where the Spotify playlist is an intricate art. Take a seat at the bar, or downstairs in their welcoming living room space, where you’ll be greeted with a smile by a bartender waiting to make you their locally famous Beasy Spicy Margarita shaken up with a secret ingredient - and I know what you’re thinking, but if they told you, they’d have to kill you. Those that are wanting to take in the bustling atmosphere of Greek Street can perch in their outdoor seating area and watch the nightlife pass them by.

4. Soho Zebrano

For a classic margarita, there is no better place to sip it than at Zebrano; a cocktail bar, restaurant, and nightclub all rolled into one in the heart of Soho. With a dedication to the entertainment of city dwellers, you can expect contemporary yet stylish decor and a late night vibe that will keep your spirits high. On their classic cocktail menu, you’ll find their margarita which is made to perfection with all of the traditional ingredients we all know and love. If you can, grab a seat during their Zappy Hour from 5pm to 10pm on weekdays and 1pm to 8pm on Saturdays where you can grab a delicious marg for just £5.50.

5. Upstairs at La Bodega Negra

Hiding behind the infamous ‘peep show’ neon lights on Moor Street is Soho’s best kept secret. Boasting one of the best tequila and mezcal selections in the area, La Bodega Negra is a high-spirited taqueria where hungry Londoners can feast on tacos and other street-style Mexican dishes. If you venture upstairs, you’ll find their notorious tequila drinking den where it is margarita's galore with intriguing flavourings including hibiscus, jalapeño, and even an ice cold frozen marg with passion fruit and yellow pepper. While you’re there, be sure to admire the back bar housing 40 different types of tequila for you to try, without salt and lime if you dare…
