What’s On In London: 2nd - 8th January 2023

Marked by a frenzy of fireworks, the clinking of champagne glasses, and the jolly tune of Auld Lang Syne, 2023 arrived in style! Now that we’re in a dazzling new year, there’s plenty to look forward to - and that’s especially true when it comes to events in London. For the first, full week of 2023, get your January off to a brilliant start by heading to these incredible events in the city.

1. Museum of the Moon

If you’ve spent some time on social media, then you’ve probably come across photos of Luke Jerram’s magnificent masterpiece. Gaia, a large-scale moon featuring imagery from NASA, was an internet sensation. Now, for 2023, there’s another chance to see the stunning piece of art in its full glory. Until February, the popular installation will be back at The Painted Hall in Greenwich, where Londoners can head inside the historic building and spend ample time gazing at the beautiful moon. Don’t forget to grab a photo too!

Until 2 Feb

Location: The Painted Hall, Old Royal Naval College, King William Walk, London SE10 9NN

2. Ribbons By Matty Bovan

This week, you can chase those January blues away by putting this kaleidoscopic art exhibition on your bucket list. Ribbons by Matty Bovan is NOW Gallery’s latest installation, featuring Bovan’s huge knitted pieces that’ve been spread across the gallery to create a dazzling explosion of colour. Alongside these large-scale pieces, visitors can watch 3 short films revolving around a fantasy world where characters are shown wearing Bovan's colourful creations.

Until 5 March

Location: NOW Gallery, Soames Walk, London SE10 0SQ

3. Skate at Somerset House

Christmas may’ve come and gone, but that doesn’t mean skating season is over! Skate at Somerset House will continue to run until January 15th with expanded skate space and special events like the Skate Lates with UNIQLO. Like every year, the venue looks dazzling thanks to the 40ft Christmas tree and festive decorations provided by Moët & Chandon. This is the perfect time to get your last minute skating session in before the rinks close for good.

Until 15 Jan

Location: Somerset House, Strand, London WC2R 1LA

4. Labyrinth Movie Night & Bowie Disco

If you can't get enough of 1986 fantasy classic Labyrinth, then this special event will be right up your alley. For their latest movie extravaganza, The Clapham Grand will be showing the cult film on their massive screen and will provide guests with a host of fun activities to enjoy along the way. During the night, expect a magic dance-off, costume parades, free makeovers, themed cocktails, and a fabulous Bowie disco to end the evening with.

7 Jan 2023

Location: The Clapham Grand, 21-25 St John's Hill, London SW11 1TT

5. Twelfth Night Celebrations

For something a little bit different, Londoners have got to check out the Twelfth Night celebrations at Bankside. This Sunday, a lively parade will make its way through the streets of London. The parade stars the Holly Man from the Thames, a whimsical figure covered in evergreen foliage. As you follow the magical parade to Southwark, you’ll spot plenty of colourful costumes inspired by traditional customs, energetic combat play, and lots of dancing. 8 Jan 2023
